Announcing the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductees
The YRSA is proud to announce that the following soccer community builders were
honoured as the
2014 YRSA Hall of Fame inductees in November 2014.

Eira Keay began her career as a soccer mom of her 6 year old son, in 1982 with the Markham Soccer Club.  She quickly stepped up to volunteer a year later as a Convenor and the year later, Eira was elected as House League Director.  Word of Eira's competence spread, bringing her to the Unionville Milliken Soccer Club in 1985 as Treasurer.  Eira volunteered in both clubs until 2010 when she resurrected the
Adult League in UMSC which is still in operation today thanks to her hard work.

Eira pioneered a "Girls Only" outdoor league, is involved with the Kicks 4 Cancer committee and served for some time as a Director At Large with the York Region Soccer Association. Playing the game for 18 years, Eira feels, was a factor that has kept her as involved in the sport as she is.

Eira retired from her volunteer roles on September 28th, 2014 having demonstrated her commitment not only to the sport, its organization, its improvement and growth, but to the most important part of the sport - its players.

As the second President of the York Region Soccer Association, Tony Casole is also recognized as the longest serving in the history of our association. Tony was elected to the Presidency after the departure of Casey Van Maris (1st YRSA President) to the OSA Board in 1986. Tony served our membership for 18 years, until 2004. During his tenure, Tony was the voice of the YRSA on the OSA Board serving as our District Representative as well as volunteering on various OSA committees.

Tony was also the Vice President & President of the Woodbridge Soccer Association for 12 years, as well as a coach and convenor.

Tony was recognized for his efforts in 2004 when he was awarded a Meritorious Service Award by the Ontario Soccer Association, YRSA Life Membership, and Government of Ontario Volunteer Service Award in 2005.

Tony's leadership was instrumental in the development of the Ontario Soccer Centre in Vaughan. He remained on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Soccer Centre until his retirement. Through the contributions made by Tony Casole during his tenure, the York Region Soccer Association continues to be a respected member and leader for soccer in Ontario and Canada.

When Benny Steenhorst immigrated from his native Rotterdam, Netherlands, he brought with him his passion and love for the game of soccer. Benny has experienced our sport at all levels: Player, Manager, Coach, Referee & Executive over the span of 54 years in our district.

During his 30 year playing career, Benny competed for Ontario's provincial team on five occasions, placing third in the national championships in 1973. As a coach, he brought his youth teams to three Ontario Games medals.

As a builder of our sport, Benny was one of three founding members of the Aurora Youth Soccer Club, and one of two founding members of the York Region Soccer Association.

Benny has been recognized for his contribution to our sport and district through Meritorious and Honorary Life Memberships with the Ontario Soccer Association, York Region Soccer Association and the Newmarket & District Soccer League.

Benny is currently the Administrator for York Region Soccer League and Vice-President of the Newmarket & District Soccer League (founded in 1954).

YRSA Awarded $202,000 Trillium Grant
Recently, the Ontario Trillium Foundation awarded the YRSA $202,000 over three years to support the technical director position in order to guide and assist member clubs in adapting the national LTPD program. Along with enhancing the skills and knowledge of volunteer coaches, clinics and camp programs for children will be offered that will increase participation and reduce drop-out rates.
