History of the Cup

The YRSL Youth Cup was named after Tommy McGarrigle in 2009. Tommy McGarrigle spent 3 decades encouraging, promoting and coaching young players to love his beloved game at the Markham Soccer Club.  Tommy was well known throughout York Region as a strong advocate for the sport. Tommy believed that all levels of play should have the opportunity to enjoy good competition and most definitely within their community.  Tommy was a fierce competitor on the field, and he was always ready for a handshake once the final whistle blew.  Friendship and respect always; and true competition on the field.  This remains the heart of York Region's Youth district league, as it was only fitting that the Cup be named after Tommy when he passed away from Cancer in 2009 so that his legacy, enthusiasm and love of the game remain the core message for this tournament.
